The U S Department of Transportation recently isued an advisory letter regarding packaging of batteries

The US Department of Transportation (DOT) issued a Battery Recycling Advisory Letter during April which states that the DOT's Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration's (PHMSA's) intent is to more stringently enforce existing battery packaging regulations as set forth in 49 CFR Parts 171-180.   The full advisory letter is available on the US DOT website by clicking on this link: Battery Advisory Letter. In addition, two advisory letters regarding the issue are available for review on the US DOT website.  Click the following links to read them:  PHMSA Letter #1  PHMSA Letter #2

Ross Environmental Services currently accepts and manages battery streams by collecting them and transshipping them to a third-party vendor.  We encourage all of our customers to comply with the US DOT regulations when shipping any battery waste stream. Essentially, all batteries - excluding spent 1.5 volt alkaline (common A, AA, AAA, C, D type) batteries - must be packaged with a non-conductive packaging or in such a manner that they cannot create a circuit and a fire hazard.   More information on the regulations and appropriately packaging batteries is available in this factsheet:  Battery Packaging Factsheet.

Ross Environmental Services also sells packaging products that offer easy compliance solutions. Click here to learn more: Packaging Products

Effective November 1, 2009, Ross Incineration Services  will contact customers if, upon receipt and inspection, it is determined that batteries are not packaged in accordance with regulatory requirements.  The company will assess a labor fee plus materials for repackaging batteries to comply with these regulations when they are transshipped from our facility.

Please feel free to contact Ross Environmental's Technical Services Department at 1-800-878-ROSS (7677) with any questions.
